frequently asked questions answered by the Church of God in Summersville, WV

How do I know which church is right?

Most importantly, spend much time in prayer and ask God to be your guide. As you consider a particular place of worship, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is it a man-made denomination with sects and creeds?
  • Was it founded by a certain man or group of reformers?
  • Can you find the name of the church in the Bible?
  • Does the church have a headquarters?
  • Do all doctrines line up with the Word of God?
  • Does salvation alone make you a member OR do they offer an official church membership system (cards, baptism, etc)?

Where are your headquarters?

According to the Bible, Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church of God. For that reason, we have no earthly headquarters or "general offices."

  • Ephesians 1:22-23
  • Isaiah 9:6
  • Ephesians 4:15
  • Hebrews 12:22-23

What must I do to be saved?

The good news of the Gospel is that you can be saved and live a holy life. You don't have to practice sin. When you meet the conditions, God will not only forgive you, but He will fill you with power whereby you can live holy each day.

To be saved, you must first admit that you are a sinner and need Christ in your life. People often get hung up here. They feel they're already good enough and don't really need God. After all, "salvation is just for the down-and-outers." However, the Bible lets us know that . . .

  • all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
  • our righteousness is as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).
  • all must be born again (John 3:3).

The next step involves talking to God in prayer. Fancy words aren't needed, just a humble and contrite heart. Simply confess your sins and ask forgiveness, along with asking Christ to come and live in your heart. This involves more than just turning over a new leaf or trying to do better. You must be willing to turn your back on sin and let Christ take control of your life.

The Bible refers to this experience as the "new birth," denoting the change that takes place once we are saved. The old, sinful ways end, and a new life of righteous living begins. This all comes about when one is filled with God's Spirit.
